Middlewich Spring League Round Two

The weather today was much warmer, we were all in the hope that the canal would fish much better! Young Ian (aka the Brazilian Fly) did the draw for us and as ever the lad drew us one really good peg, bridge hole, peg 13 in B section. Guess who was on that? Me (for a change!) Leaving John and Ian on mediocre pegs and Andy in a reasonable area!

Middlewich Spring League Round One

Thirteen teams of four signed up for this league on the popular Middlewich stretch of the Trent & Mersey Canal. The Trabucco Midlands squad were represented in force along with Sensas North West, these two squads fielding five teams between them alone. We entered one team this year consisting of myself, John Brogden, Ian Morrison and Andy Lewis. Quite a young team most would say with an average age of 25! The team is keen to finish as high as possible given last years second placing under Mossy.

Butler takes top spot in Cudmore Individual League!

At one time, Ted Carter Southport’s Stevie Butler would never look at a commercial and spent most of his time fishing (and bagging) on his beloved Leeds & Liverpool Canal! How times have changed. Steve now spends a lot of his spare time fishing the Cudmore complex in Staffordshire and notched up a commanding lead in the individual league topped by another section win on Sunday to lift the overall title and pick up £400 for winning the league!

Shimano Scrappage Scheme

Filed under: Tackle Talk — Tags: , — Dave Preston

Scrappage-Scheme-advertAfter the government’s car scrappage scheme comes the Shimano Scrappage Scheme, which applies to reels (for now, anyway).

This is how it works -

Until the start of the new season (16th June), you can bring in any old Baitrunner or freespool reel (Shimano or not, working or not), and we will give you £25 off the RRP of any new Baitrunner XT model.

The old reels then go to Shimano. Any Shimano baitrunners are refurbished and repaired as necessary, while any other makes are weighed in for scrap.

The refurbished baitrunners will then be passed on to two charities, Get Hooked On Fishing and Fish For Life, to help teach disengaged and disadvantaged children how to fish.

A Blast of Common Sense

Henry Gilbey, who you might have seen on TV presenting fishing shows, has a smashing blog which is well worth a read and features some stunning photography. One recent post that I wanted to share with you talks about some of the myths and rumours that go around about fishing tackle, where it’s made and how it performs. Take a look.

44lb Sturgeon From Lancaster Canal

44lb SturgeonSometimes you get surprises when you are out fishing, but this one beat them all!

While pike fishing on the Lancaster Canal the other evening, I had a steady run on the left hand rod, on a sprat. Not wanting to deep hook the fish, I struck immediately and was surprised at the power and speed of the fish on the other end.
